Monday, October 11: The official monsoon season may have ended on September 30, but the monsoon rains have turned particularly active over the southern peninsula since the starting of this month. Wet weather conditions have marked their constant presence over the region for the past several weeks, mainly due to the formation of low-pressure systems in the east and circulations near the coastal areas.

Now, the latest forecast highlights that inclement weather conditions will prevail across the Southern Peninsula this week as well. Kerala, in particular, is likely to face the brunt of heavy showers for the next three to four days.

Over the last 24 hours till Monday morning, Vaikom in Kottayam registered a maximum of 108 mm rainfall. Significant precipitation of over 30 mm was recorded in isolated parts of districts like Alappuzha (62 mm), Thiruvananthapuram (45 mm), Kollam (45 mm), Kozhikode (39 mm), and Kannur (33 mm).

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclonic circulation present over the east-central Arabian Sea is driving these wet weather conditions. The national forecaster expects the system to persist for the next 3-4 days.

In addition, an east-west trough at lower levels runs from a cyclonic circulation located over the north Andaman Sea to the system mentioned above. This blend of meteorological conditions is expected to produce favourable wet weather conditions over Kerala and the surrounding southern states.

The Weather Channel met team also expects the heaviest showers over Kerala, with rain totals adding up to 200 mm on Monday and further exceeding 50 mm on Tuesday.

To ensure the people remain updated on the weather situation, the IMD has kept Kerala under a yellow watch for today, October 11. After that, the alert level has been upgraded to orange as the wet weather is expected to gain pace and remain that way for the next three days. With this alert, the IMD urges residents to ‘be prepared’ for inclement weather situations from Tuesday to Thursday.

The rough weather conditions will dominate several districts, namely Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki, from October 12-14. All these places are likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rains.

Kerala has been experiencing frequent bouts of rain since the beginning of this month. Overall, Kerala has recorded 170 mm of rainfall compared to its long term average of 100 mm during the first ten days of October. Most districts have notched a ‘large excess’ level of rain between October 1 to 10.
