Washington, D.C. – President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday his intention to nominate former Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) as Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The decision highlights Collins’ military background and commitment to veterans’ issues.
“Doug is a Veteran himself, who currently serves our Nation as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve Command, and fought for our Country in the Iraq War,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We must take care of our brave men and women in uniform, and Doug will be a great advocate for our Active Duty Servicemembers, Veterans, and Military Families to ensure they have the support they need. Thank you, Doug, for your willingness to serve our country in this very important role.”
A Lifelong Commitment to Service
Collins, a three-term congressman from Georgia, is widely recognized for his dedication to public service. His military career includes service as a chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve and deployment to Iraq, where he ministered to troops on the front lines. His firsthand understanding of military life and the challenges faced by veterans has shaped his approach to policy and advocacy.
During his time in Congress, Collins served on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Rules. He was also instrumental in passing legislation to support veterans, including measures to streamline the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and improve access to care.

As secretary, Collins will be tasked with overseeing one of the largest government agencies, responsible for providing healthcare and benefits to over 9 million veterans. His goals include modernizing VA operations, enhancing mental health support, and cutting red tape to make services more accessible.
The nomination comes as Trump doubles down on his commitment to military families, a central theme of his campaign. In his announcement, Trump reiterated the importance of supporting those who have served the country. “It’s time to deliver for our veterans and give them the world-class care they deserve,” Collins wrote.
